This class is for ages 8 - 17.
PROJECTS
January: Basic Sewing Machine, Tool Safety, Scrunchie
Learn the basics of threading, cleaning, and the functions of your sewing machine. We will go into some of the basic machine functions and getting comfortable with the use of the machine. Students will also learn general safety around operating the machine as well as the tools that are necessary to be successful sewists, such as rotary cutters, rulers and irons. We will finish the class by making a hair scrunchie to use the skills that we went over during the class.
February: Pillow Case
Students will make a pillow case using the burrito method. Learning about seam allowances and the first of seam finishes that we will cover students will learn a French seam to create a clean finish in their pillowcase to make it last for years to come.
March: Apron
One of the first projects any beginner makes is an Apron. Students will learn the basics of rolled hems and start to learn the importance of top stitching.
April: Tote Bag
Students will have the opportunity to combine some of the skills from the last two projects. The tote bag features the return of French seams and the importance top stitching as structural support for the any projects in the future.
May: Zipper Pouch
One of the most intimidating skills in much of sewing is installing a zipper. The zipper pouch allows for a fun, easy way to start to begin to feel comfortable with this skill.
June: Mini Messenger Bag
This project will teach students how adding stitching in different areas will change the structure of the project by adding a box bottom. Students will also learn how to effectively add a lining into projects.
July: Circle Skirt or Shorts
Students will learn two of the most fundamental elements of garment sewing by learning how to use elastic in projects as well as a basic hem.
August: Stuffed Owl
Create your own new friend with the stuffed owl. This projects main focus is the use of different types of material. Students are introduced to Cuddle fabric as well as flannel and felt. Students will gain practice in sewing curves as well as some simple applique.
September, October, November: Patchwork Quilt
Starting with picking out fabric to binding a quilt this project are students making their own lap quilt from start to finish. Students will learn the skill of being able to match seams, quilt their finished quilt tops and how to properly bind the edges of their quilt.
December: Party!!!
We'll celebrate our accomplishments with an End of the Year party!!!
